Half of a great permanent makeup result is what you do — and don't do — in the six weeks afterward. This is the aftercare guidance Cynthia gives every Brow Expressions client in Prescott, AZ, written out so you can keep it on your phone.
The Short Answer
Keep the area clean and barely moist, don't pick or scratch flaking skin, keep it out of pools, saunas and direct sun for about two weeks, and skip retinol or exfoliating acids over the area permanently. Brows heal in 4–6 weeks, lips in a similar window with a few days of peeling. A perfecting touch-up at 6–12 weeks is recommended and priced separately; Cynthia quotes it at your first appointment.
The First 24 Hours
Gently blot the area with a clean, damp cloth or the wipes you're sent, then pat dry. Brows get a thin film of aftercare ointment — thin, not thick; suffocating fresh pigment pulls it out. Lips need small sips through a straw and no lipstick. Expect the colour to look dramatically darker than your final result. That's normal for everyone.
Days 2–7: The Ugly-Duckling Stretch
The colour softens as the surface skin repairs. Brows may feel waxy, then itchy, then flaky. Lips peel in small pieces. Two rules carry you through:
- ✦ Do not pick. Lifting a flake before it's ready takes the pigment under it with it — that's the #1 cause of patchy healing.
- ✦ Keep them dry-ish. Short showers are fine; no long soaks, no swimming, no sweating through a workout, no steam.
Days 7–14
Most flaking finishes. Colour still looks lighter and softer than it will end up. You can resume normal skincare everywhere except directly over the area, and start wearing a hat when you're out in the sun.
Weeks 4–6: The Real Result
Pigment resurfaces as the skin fully remodels. This is when the healed colour and shape become clear — and when the touch-up decision is made. Most clients need the touch-up; a few genuinely don't, and Cynthia will tell you which you are.
Brows vs. Lips: What's Different
Brow aftercare
- ✦ Cleanse gently once a day, then a rice-grain amount of ointment.
- ✦ No makeup on the brows until fully healed.
- ✦ No tinting or waxing the brow area for two weeks.
- ✦ Once healed, SPF over the brows every day — sun is the fastest fading agent there is.
Lip aftercare
- ✦ Blot and reapply the provided balm often — dry lips crack, cracked lips scar.
- ✦ Avoid spicy food, hot drinks, alcohol and oily foods for the first few days.
- ✦ No lipstick until peeling is completely finished.
- ✦ If you're prone to cold sores, take the antiviral Cynthia discusses at your consult — lip blush can otherwise trigger an outbreak.
Things That Quietly Ruin Permanent Makeup
- ✦ Retinol, retinoids, AHAs, BHAs and glycolic acid applied over the area — they speed up cell turnover and lift colour.
- ✦ Chemical peels and laser facials that graze the brow area.
- ✦ Chlorinated pools, hot tubs and saltwater in the first two weeks.
- ✦ Sunburn on the brows or lips, at any stage — but especially in month one.
- ✦ Picking. Always picking.
When to Call Cynthia Instead of Waiting
Some things aren't normal: spreading redness, warmth, thick yellow discharge, fever, or swelling that gets worse after day three. Text or call (928) 413-4040 and send a photo — that's quicker than worrying. Mild darkness, itching, flaking and uneven lightness are all ordinary healing.
Aftercare Is Part of the Price, Not an Extra
Every Brow Expressions appointment includes written aftercare, the products you need for the first days, and a check-in so nothing goes sideways quietly. Services are $400 each (nano brows, microblading, powder brows, lip blush); eyebrow tattoo removal starts at $150. Book a free phone consult at api.ablepro.app or visit at 1228 Willow Creek Rd Ste 3A, Prescott, AZ 86301.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wash my face after permanent makeup?
Yes — just keep the treated area itself from soaking. Wash around it, then gently blot and pat dry. For brows, a damp cloth and light patting beats a running shower hitting your forehead.
How soon can I exercise after microblading or nano brows?
Light movement is fine after 48 hours; heavy sweating should wait about 7–10 days. Sweat carries salt to the area and can lift pigment before it sets, and gyms are not the cleanest places for fresh skin.
Why do my brows look so light after a week?
That's the normal middle phase. A fresh layer of skin forms over the pigment, which makes brows look pale or even patchy. Colour resurfaces between weeks 4 and 6 — which is exactly why the touch-up is booked for weeks 6–12.
Can I wear makeup over healed permanent makeup?
Once fully healed, yes — though most clients find they need far less. Keep makeup and removers off the area during healing, and don't use an exfoliating or retinol product directly over your brows afterward.
What if a patch heals pale or patchy?
Send Cynthia a photo. That's what the 6–12 week perfecting touch-up is for — it's recommended because some areas hold pigment more than others, and one short session evens it out.
